Skiing from Monaco: Snow Two Hours from the Sea

Monaco is known for the Mediterranean, less so for its closeness to the mountains. Yet three resorts in the Alpes-Maritimes sit about two hours by road from the Principality. For residents, it changes the rhythm of winter: you can go from the sea to the snow without boarding a plane.

Three resorts, one mountain range

Isola 2000 is the one most tied to Monaco. Set at 2,000 metres and known for its snow reliability, it has hosted the training centre of the Ski Club de Monaco and the Monegasque Ski Federation since the mid-1980s, which has made it a familiar address for many Monegasque families. On a clear day, the sea can be seen from the Cime de Sistron, at 2,610 metres.

Auron is a village of wooden chalets, with a ski area of about 135 kilometres of slopes, largely south-facing, which puts it among the sunniest resorts in France. Isola 2000 and Auron together total more than 200 kilometres of slopes.

Valberg, quieter, offers about 90 kilometres of slopes and 23 lifts, in a village well suited to families and first turns on skis.

The season and the journey

In winter 2025-2026, Isola 2000 and Auron opened on 6 December and closed in mid-April, with Valberg opening a week later. The season therefore generally runs from early December to mid-April, depending on snow.

From Monaco, you join the A8 motorway before climbing by mountain roads. Allow around two hours, more in heavy traffic or snow. Bring the necessary winter equipment, and check that the resort is open before you set off.

A day trip or a weekend

A day on the slopes without an overnight stay is possible, but it means about four hours of driving there and back: it is better to leave early. A weekend is more comfortable, with a night in resort. Families who ski regularly often organise themselves around this rhythm, alternating day trips and short stays.

What it means for living in Monaco

Choosing a place to live rarely comes down to a single criterion. In Monaco, the Mediterranean climate, the sea and access to snow within two hours combine in a way few destinations offer. For a family, it is a concrete argument in the decision to settle in the Principality, alongside schools or proximity to Nice airport.
